Towards the future
The neoliberal industrialists who run the world are convinced that we need more of what we have now: more and more output (even if the output is designed to be fermented and then burned as ‘biofuel’); more and more capital investment (meaning interest, meaning circulation of wealth); bigger and bigger farms (economies of scale and more and more power to the people who call the shots); and husbandry simplified to suit the needs of heavy engineering and industrial chemistry which is where the biggest profits are, at least on the production side – which means monoculture, often culminating in cloning which implies absolute genetic uniformity. GM is applied wherever it can find a foothold, not necessarily because it adds anything truly useful, but to ensure that a few high-tech companies and their supporting governments have more and more control. Of course the collateral damage is enormous but that, we are told, can be cured by more high tech which is also lucrative (and also serves to concentrate power).
If we want farming that is actually designed to provide good food for everyone without wrecking societies and the world at large then, as is so often the case, we need to do the precise opposite of what those with most power consider to be progress, which they use our money to promote. Some farmers and some institutions are already on the case.
